Neoconocephalus ensiger occurs in eastern and central North America; from southern Ontario and Quebec to eastern Colorado, Missouri, and North Carolina; isolated records in New Mexico (Map). It is found in tall grasses and moist weedy fields, often along forest edges and roadsides; July through September. Length 45-64 mm. Two phases: green and brown. Light stripes on the head and thorax; the lower surface of head cone is black. The wings extend beyond abdomen, and are mottled in brown individuals. The female has a very long ovipositor. N. ensiger feeds on seeds and flowers of grasses (Poaceae).
